A Sunstate Airlines de Havilland Dash 8-400 on behalf of Qantas, registration VH-QOI performing flight QF-2017 from Sydney,NS to Broken Hill,NS (Australia), had been enroute at FL220 and was in the initial descent towards Broken Hill when the crew stopped the descent at FL180 and decided to return to Sydney due to a gear problem. The aircraft landed safely back in Sydney about 3:20 hours after departure.

A replacement DH8D registration VH-QOY reached Broken Hill with a delay of about 5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 20 hours after landing back.
