A PAL Philippine Airlines Airbus A340-300, registration RP-C3441 performing flight PR-1857 from Manila to Cebu (Philippines) with 241 passengers and 13 crew, was in the initial climb out of Manila's runway 06 when the crew reported smoke in the cockpit, stopped the climb at 2500 feet MSL and returned to Manila for a safe landing on runway 06 about 8 minutes after departure. Emergency services checked the aircraft finding no trace of fire, heat or smoke.

A replacement Airbus A340-300 registration RP-C3436 reached Cebu with a delay of 5 hours.

Passengers reported they smelled smoke in the cabin but did not see any smoke.

Philippines CAA reported the crew reported suspected smoke in the cockpit shortly after takeoff and returned to Manila.

The occurrence aircraft resumed service about 27 hours after landing back.
