A Jazz de Havilland Dash 8-300, registration C-FACV performing flight QK-8258 from Nanaimo,BC to Vancouver,BC (Canada) with 35 passengers and 3 crew, was climbing out of Nanaimo's runway 16 when the right hand engine emitted a loud bang and emitted flames. The crew shut the engine down, activated the engine fire suppression and returned to Nanaimo for a safe landing on runway 16 about 10 minutes after departure. The aircraft stopped on the runway, the occupants rapidly disembarked onto the runway.

The airport was closed for about 4 hours.

The airline reported the crew observed an engine oil problem just prior to flames being observed from the engine, the crew discharged engine fire agent successfully extinguishing the flames and performed a safe landing.

Passengers reported a loud bang followed by streaks of flames were emitted by the engine.
