An American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83, registration N565AA performing flight AA-1645 from Raleigh/Durham,NC to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) with 138 people on board, was climbing through 16,000 feet out of Raleigh/Durham when the crew reported they had needed to shut the left hand engine (JT8D) down. The aircraft returned to Raleigh/Durham for a safe landing on runway 05L about 30 minutes after departure.

The airport reported the aircraft returned due to an engine oil leak.

The engine was replaced as result of an engine oil pump failure.
