A Jazz De Havilland Dash 8-300, registration C-FADF performing flight QK-8504 from Vancouver,BC to Sandspit,BC (Canada) with 27 people on board, was enroute at FL240 abeam Port Hardy,BC (Canada) when the crew experienced the onset of light turbulence and illuminated the fasten seat belt signs, the flight attendant secured the cabin. The turbulence increased in intensity, the crew therefore requested a descend to FL220. During the descent the aircraft suddenly lost 1000 feet of altitude, the crew lost control of the aircraft for a few seconds. After regaining control the crew requested and was cleared to descend to 17,000 feet. During the descent moderate to severe turbulence continued. Once the aircraft was clear of turbulence, the flight attendant checked the passengers, 4 of which reported minor head and neck injuries. The crew requested medical services to meet the aircraft on arrival and continued to Sandspit for a safe landing about 50 minutes after the turbulence encounter. One of the injured passengers was taken to a hospital, the others were attended by paramedics.

The Canadian TSB reported GFA charts used for flight planning indicated moderate clear air turbulence along the planned flight route, SIGMETs as well as pilot reports did not report any turbulence along the planned route. Maintenance inspected the aircraft and found no faults. The aircraft was returned to service. The TSB did not open an investigation.
