An AirAsia Airbus A320-200, registration 9M-AJT performing flight AK-10 from Chennai (India) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), was enroute at FL370 about 240 west of Penang (Malaysia) when the crew reported a problem with the left hand engine (CFM56). The aircraft drifted down to FL150, the crew reported they had shut the engine down and diverted to Penang. The aircraft landed safely on Penang's runway 04 about 50 minutes after leaving FL370.

A replacement A320-200 registration 9M-NEO reached Kuala Lumpur with a delay of 5.5 hours.

An observer reported the exhaust section of the left hand engine was removed the following day. The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Penang 64 hours after landing.
