An Open Skies France Boeing 757-200 in colours and on behalf of British Airways, registration F-HAVI performing flight EC-8003/BA-8003 from Paris Orly (France) to Newark,NJ (USA) with 100 people on board, was enroute at FL360 over the Atlantic Ocean about 225nm northeast of Gander,NL (Canada) when the crew received a "WHEEL WELL FIRE" EICAS indication. The crew completed the checklist items, declared Mayday and initiated a diversion to Gander. About 15 minutes later the indication ceased, the crew continued the diversion for a safe landing in Gander.

The Canadian TSB reported that no traces of fire, heat or smoke were found. The wheel well fire warning system was identified faulty.

The aircraft continued the flight after about 3.5 hours on the ground and reached Newark with a delay of 4 hours.
