A United Boeing 757-200, registration N14120 performing flight UA-270 from Newark,NJ (USA) to Shannon (Ireland) with 176 people on board, was climbing out of Newark when the crew stopped the climb at FL270. About 10 minutes later the crew declared emergency reporting their probe heater was not working. The aircraft returned to Newark for a safe landing on runway 04R about 50 minutes later. After landing the crew advised no further assistance was needed, emergency vehicles however followed the aircraft to the apron.

A replacement Boeing 757-200 registration N17128 reached Shannon with a delay of about 4:20 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Newark about 15 hours after landing back.
