A SAA South African Airways Airbus A340-300, registration ZS-SXA performing flight SA-287 from Hong Kong (China) to Johannesburg (South Africa), was enroute at FL280 about one hour into the flight, 460nm westsouthwest of Hong Kong about to enter Vietnamese Airspace, when the crew decided to return to Hong Kong reporting problems with one of the four engines (CFM56). On approach to Hong Kong the crew requested a localizer approach runway 07R with a 10nm final. The aircraft landed safely on runway 07R about 2:50 hours after departure, the crew advised that no further assistance was needed and taxied the aircraft to the apron.

A passenger reported the crew announced an engine failure, they were returning to Hong Kong.

The flight was cancelled.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Hong Kong 75 hours after landing.
