A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration 9M-MXA performing flight MH-177 from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to Male (Maldives), was enroute at FL360 about 700nm west of Kuala Lumpur when the crew decided to return to Kuala Lumpur. The aircraft landed safely back in Kuala Lumpur about 3.5 hours after departure.

A passenger reported the captain announced the standby generator had failed.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration 9M-MXN reached Male with a delay of 5 hours.
