A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N907DE performing flight DL-2325 from Atlanta,GA to Baltimore,MD (USA), was climbing through FL270 when a loud bang was heard from the right hand engine (JT8D). The crew shut the engine down and returned the aircraft to Atlanta for a safe landing about 30 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported a loud bang was heard and the aircraft shuddered. The captain subsequently announced that the right hand engine had failed and they would return to Atlanta.

A replacement MD-88 registration N911DE reached Baltimore with a delay of 5 hours.
