A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N907DE performing flight DL-1695 from Columbus,OH to Atlanta,GA (USA), was in the initial climb out of Columbus' runway 28L when the right hand engine (JT8D) emitted a bang and streaks of flames prompting the crew to stop the climb at 5000 feet, shut the engine down and return to Columbus for a safe landing on runway 28L about 17 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported the right hand engine failed immediately after becoming airborne. The captain later announced, that the engine had suffered a compressor stall.

A replacement Boeing 737-900 registration N852DN reached Atlanta with a delay of 5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for 21 hours, then positioned to Atlanta, remained on the ground in Atlanta for another 24 hours, then resumed service.
