An ANZ Air New Zealand Boeing 787-900, registration ZK-NZL performing flight NZ-99 from Auckland (New Zealand) to Tokyo Narita (Japan) with 256 people on board, was climbing out of Auckland when the crew stopped the climb at FL200 due to problems with the cabin pressure. The aircraft entered a hold at FL200 for about one hour, descended to FL150 for another 70 minutes, then returned to Auckland for a safe landing about 2:45 hours after departure.

The flight and the return flight were cancelled.

The airline confirmed there was an air conditioning issue. The rotation needed to be cancelled. The passengers (both in Auckland and Tokyo) were taken to hotels and have been rebooked onto the next available service.

Nine of the 11 dreamliners of Air New Zealand are currently undergoing inspections in accordance with Airworthiness Directives, see News: EASA and FAA issue Airworthiness Directives on Boeing 787 engines.
