An Indigo Airbus A320-200 Neo, registration VT-ITW performing flight 6E-923 from Chennai to Kolkata (India) with 136 people on board, was climbing through FL230 out of Chennai when an engine (PW1127) emitted a loud bang and streaks of flame followed by severe vibrations. The crew shut the engine down and returned to Chennai for a safe landing about 45 minutes after departure.

A replacement A320-200 registration VT-IHJ reached Kolkata with a delay of 4.5 hours.

India's DGCA have opened an investigation into the occurrence.

On Jan 17th 2019 India's AIB reported the aircraft was climbing through FL210 when there was a loud bang and sparks as well as an engine stall and engine overheat indication. The aircraft returned to Chennai. The right hand engine suffered internal damage. The occurrence was rated a serious incident and is being investigated by India's AIB.

On Feb 27th 2019 the NTSB added that the engine received damage to the low pressure turbine stage 3 blades.
