An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N980AN performing flight AA-2183 from Austin,TX to New York JFK,NY (USA), was in the initial climb out of Austin's runway 35R when the crew stopped the climb at 2500 feet reporting an odour of burning plastics on board and returned to Austin for a safe landing on runway 35L about 10 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration N908NN reached New York with a delay of 5.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft had undergone an engine wash during the previous night and was to perform the first flight since. The aircraft resumed service 22 hours after landing back.
