A Lufthansa Cargo McDonnell MD-11 freighter, registration D-ALCM performing flight GEC-8224 from Chicago,IL (USA) to Mexico City (Mexico), was on final approach to Mexico City's runway 23L when the crew initiated a go around due to a wind shear warning. The aircraft climbed to 12,000 feet, performed another approach to runway 23L about 12 minutes after the first go-around and needed to go around again. The crew decided to divert to Acapulco (Mexico), climbed to FL240, needed to deviate around a number of thunderstorm cells enroute and declared emergency due to low fuel on approach to Acapulco. The aircraft landed safely on Acapulco's runway 10 about 50 minutes after the first go around.

Germany's BFU reported in their June Bulletin released on Nov 16th 2016, that the aircraft landed with less than the required minimum fuel on board.
