An Air Nelson de Havilland Dash 8-300 on behalf of Air New Zealand, registration ZK-NET performing flight NZ-8117 from Auckland to Palmerston North (New Zealand), was climbing out of Auckland's runway 05R a few seconds after becoming airborne, when the left hand engine failed and needed to be shut down. The aircraft levelled off at 1600 feet and returned to Auckland for a safe landing on runway 05R about 10 minutes after departure.

The airline reported the crew received indications of a possible issue with one of the engines prompting the crew to shut the engine down and return to Auckland. The flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto the next flights or accomodated in hotels for flights the next day.
