An Air Nelson de Havilland Dash 8-300 on behalf of Air New Zealand, registration ZK-NEF performing flight NZ-8260 from Wellington to Tauranga (New Zealand) with 41 people on board, was descending towards Tauranga when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (PW123) down. The aircraft continued for a safe landing on Tauranga's runway 25.

Passengers reported the engine emitted a loud bang, then smoke entered the cabin.

The aircraft is still on the ground in Tauranga about 19 hours after landing.
