An Air Corsica Airbus A320-200, registration F-HBSA performing flight XK-803 from Rome Fiumicino (Italy) to Ajaccio (France), was accelerating for takeoff from Fiumicino's runway 25 when the crew heard a loud bang from the right hand side of the aircraft and received an "ENG 2 FAIL" ECAM message. The crew rejected takeoff at low speed, about 25 KIAS applying reverse thrust and left hand brakes, as a precaution the right hand engine's (CFM56) firehandle was pulled. Emergency services responded and checked the engine, the aircraft subsequently taxied to the apron with the fire engines in trail.

The French BEA reported based on ANSV information, that a post occurrence investigtion revealed substantial damage of the low pressure turbine blades and metallic debris in the engine outlet. Italy's ANSV rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation.
