An American Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N204UW performing flight AA-876 from Charlotte,NC (USA) to Aruba (Aruba), was enroute at FL390 about 140nm westsouthwest of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) when the left hand engine (RB211) failed showing no rotation on the N3 spool with N1 and N2 spools showing rotation. The engine was shut down, the crew diverted to Santo Domingo for a safe landing about 30 minutes later.

A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration N169UW was dispatched to Santo Domingo, resumed the flight and reached Aruba with a delay of 25.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is undergoing the change of the left hand engine, the engine gearbox was found damaged, its shaft could not be turned by the engine.
