A United Boeing 767-400, registration N76064 performing flight UA-144 from Honolulu,HI to Washington Dulles,DC (USA) with 299 people on board, was enroute at FL310 about 400nm northeast of Honolulu when the crew decided to return to Honolulu, descended the aircraft first to FL260 then down to FL180 for the return. The aircraft landed safely on Honolulu's runway 08L about 2:20 hours after departure, vacated the runway and requested emergency vehicles to check out the landing gear for anything unusual before continuing to the apron.

A passenger tweeted they had suffered an engine (CF6) failure about 90 minutes into the flight and were returning to Honolulu.

The airline did not confirm an engine failure but stated a mechanical malfunction prompted the return.

The flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.
