A Westjet Boeing 737-800, registration C-FWJS performing flight WS-724 from Vancouver,BC to Toronto,ON (Canada), departed Vancouver's runway 08L following a Philippine Airlines Airbus A340-300, registration RP-C3436 performing flight PR-126 from Vancouver,BC (Canada) to New York JFK,NY (USA). When the 737 climbed through 800 feet AGL, the aircraft encountered wake turbulence causing the aircraft to roll to a right bank angle of 40 degrees before the crew recovered the aircraft. The aircraft cotninued to Toronto for a safe landing.

The Canadian TSB reported that the separation between the two aircraft was 5.25nm, the required minimum separation between the heavy and medium aircraft was 5nm.
