A UPS United Parcel Service Boeing 757-200 freighter, registration N466UP performing flight 5X-2870 from Louisville,KY to Albuquerque,NM (USA) with 2 crew, was climbing out of Louisville's runway 17R when the crew declared Mayday reporting they had unreliable indications querying ATC about what altitude they were indicating, ATC reported they were showing 6900 feet with the crew advising they were showing 8000 feet. ATC observed varying altitudes and commented the altitude indications were changing. The crew subsequently reported they were in the clear. The aircraft descended to 4000 feet, the crew prepared for an ILS approach to runway 17R. After reporting being ready for the approach the crew cancelled emergency, intercepted the localizer and landed without further incident on runway 17R about 45 minutes after departure.

The aircraft returned to service about 11 hours after landing.
