A Jetstar Airbus A321-200, registration VH-VWZ performing flight JQ-413 from Coolangatta/Gold Coast,QL to Sydney,NS (Australia) with 190 people on board, was enroute at FL280 about 60nm northwest of Newcastle,NS (Australia) when the crew initiated an early descent advising they had a developing situation on board and they might need to divert to Williamtown. The crew subsequently donned their oxygen masks, declared PAN PAN PAN reporting smoke from the forward lavatory and diverted to Newcastle's Williamtown Airport. The aircraft landed safely on runway 12 about 17 minutes after leaving FL280. The passengers disembarked normally.

The passenger were bussed to Sydney.

The airline reported the cause of the smell is under investigation, later adding that no technical anomaly had been found in the examination of the aircraft, it is therefore likely that smoke from a cigarette caused the smell.

A passenger described the smell originating from a lavatory as "burnt toast", the crew suggested an electrical problem.

The airport described the occurrence as "false alarm".
