An Aeromexico Boeing 787-800, registration N964AM performing flight AM-2 from Madrid,SP (Spain) to Mexico City (Mexico), was enroute near the Azores Islands (Portugal) when the crew decided to divert to Santa Maria (Portugal) due to an electrical failure. The aircraft landed safely in Santa Maria.

Passengers reported lights in the cabin failed.

Radar data suggest that the aircraft was no longer able to provide position and Mode-S data on its transponder. The last position provided by the aircraft transponder was just at FL360 at the south coast of the Pico Island (Azores).

The passengers returned to Madrid and were booked onto the next flight AM-2 which departed on Mar 20th.
