A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration 9M-MRE performing flight MH-387 from Shanghai Pudong (China) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), was climbing out of Shanghai when an engine (Trent 892) emitted three loud bangs prompting the crew to shut the engine down and return to Shanghai Pudong for a safe landing.

The airline confirmed the aircraft returned to Shanghai due to some mechanical anomaly.

Passengers reported there were three loud bangs.

A listener on frequency reported the crew indicated an engine failure on climb out.

The flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto flight MH-387 the following day (Airbus A330-300 registration 9M-MTA) and reached Kuala Lumpur with a delay of 24 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Shanghai.
