A LAN Airlines Boeing 787-800, registration CC-BBA performing flight LA-532 from Santiago (Chile) to New York JFK,NY (USA), was enroute at FL380 about 650nm north of Santiago, when the crew received indication of a malfunction of the air conditioning system, descended the aircraft to FL100 and returned to Santiago for a safe landing about 3 hours after departure.

A replacement Boeing 787-800 registration CC-BBD reached New York as flight LA-532Z with a delay of 18 hours.

Passengers reported it became hot in the cabin and they felt lack of air, the inflight entertainment system was also shut down. The oxygen masks did not deploy.

The airline confirmed the aircraft had to return due to indication of a malfunction of the air conditioning system.
