An Air India Airbus A320-200, registration VT-EDF performing flight AI-403 from Delhi to Bangalore (India) with 125 passengers, was enroute near Bhopal (India) when the captain decided to take a toilet break, the first officer and a trainee pilot remained in the cockpit. When the captain wanted to return to the cockpit however, the cockpit door refused to open and could not be convinced to give up by captain, trainee and even refused to obey when the first officer tried his luck. The first officer decided to divert the aircraft to Bhopal where the aircraft landed safely.

Maintenance finally managed to open and repair the door, that had been jammed shut. After successful intervention the aircraft continued the journey to Bangalore, with the captain back in his seat, and reached Bangalore with a delay of 3 hours.

Air India confirmed the incident reporting that all efforts from inside and outside the cockpit were in vain, the door remained jammed shut, the first officer diverted the aircraft to Bhopal in accordance with operating procedures. A team of maintenance engineers rectified the fault, so that the aircraft was able to continue the flight and reached Bangalore at 22:30L about 3 hours past schedule.
