An Air India Boeing 777-300, registration VT-AER performing flight AI-116 (dep Mar 18th) from New York JFK,NY (USA) to Mumbai (India), was enroute at FL350 over Madinah (Saudi Arabia) when the crew received a cargo fire indication and decided to divert to Madinah for a safe landing on runway 17 about 25 minutes later.

The airline reported a cargo fire indication that was identified false.

The aircraft, that had departed New York with a delay of about 5 hours, remained on the ground in Madinah for about 5 hours, then continued the journey and reached Mumbai with a delay of about 10 hours.
