A Jetconnect/Qantas NZ Boeing 737-800, registration ZK-ZQA performing flight QF-142 from Auckland (New Zealand) to Sydney,NS (Australia), was enroute at FL360 about 250nm west of Auckland when the crew decided to return to Auckland after a suspicious package, possibly a bomb, had been found on board. The aircraft landed safely back on Auckland's runway 23L about 40 minutes later. The aircraft stopped at a remote location, the passengers disembarked and were bussed to the terminal.

Police reported a bomb squad checked the aircraft and package and identified the package as part of the interior of the aircraft, that is normally not visible, and released the aircraft back to service.

The airline confirmed a suspicious package on board prompted the return to Auckland.

The aircraft was able to depart again 4 hours after landing and reached Sydney with a delay of 5:15 hours.
