A United Airbus A321-200N, registration N14504 performing flight UA-2100 from Newark,NJ to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA), was enroute at FL350 about 120nm northwest of Newark when the crew initiated a rapid descent to 10,000 feet levelling off 12 minutes after leaving FL350. The aircraft returned to Newark for a safe landing on runway 22L about 65 minutes after departure.

A replacement A321-200N registration N14546 reached Chicago with a delay of about 4 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 3 hours after landing.
