An Emirates Airlines Airbus A380-800, registration A6-EDD performing flight EK-201 from Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to New York JFK,NY (USA) with 305 people on board, was descending through about FL190 towards New York when the crew was informed to expect runway 04R (length 8400 feet/2560 meters) for landing, the crew immediately requested runway 04L (length 11,350 feet/3460 meters) and was assigned that runway. A couple of minutes later, while descending towards 8000 feet the approach controller queried he had just heard EK-201 was an emergency, the crew denied emergency stressing they expected normal operation. Requests by other crews for runway 04L were declined in the following. Emergency services were told to expect a brakes failure. The A380 continued for a safe landing on runway 04L about 20 minutes after requesting runway 04L. The crew declined further assistance and taxied to the gate.
