A Jazz de Havilland Dash 8-400, registration C-GGOY performing flight QK-445 from Vancouver,BC to Terrace,BC (Canada) with 60 people on board, had just levelled off at cruise level 240 when the crew received indication the left hand DC generator was hot, sparks were seen out of the left hand engine's cowl vent. The crew declared PAN PAN, worked the related checklists and returned to Vancouver for a safe landing on runway 08R, vacated the runway via taxiway D5, then shut the left engine down. The aircraft taxied to the apron with emergency services in trail.

The Canadian TSB reported, that the crew received a No.1 DC GEN HOT caution message and sparks were seen exiting the No.1 engine cowl vent and continued: "Company maintenance found the No.1 generator inlet duct had been broken off. The generator and associate generator control unit were replaced."
