An American Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N172AJ performing flight AA-221 from Miami,FL (USA) to Recife,PE (Brazil), was enroute at FL300 about 30nm southwest of Nassau (Bahamas) when the crew received a door indication and the cabin subsequently reported the left aft door had popped and the door handle had moved. The crew descended the aircraft to 10,000 feet, entered a hold to burn off fuel and returned to Miami for a safe landing about 3 hours after departure.

The flight was cancelled. The door was rigged and the aircraft returned to service.

Following the repeat incident on Dec 13th the aircraft underwent extended door maintenance, a test flight AA-9615 was conducted and the aircraft returned to service.
