An American Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration N926UW performing flight AA-2401 from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX to Tampa,FL (USA), was enroute at FL310 about 40nm southwest of New Orleans,LA (USA) when the aircraft encountered severe turbulence causing altitude deviations of more than 150 feet. The crew continued the flight towards Tampa for about 20 minutes, then about 140nm southeast of New Orleans decided to divert to New Orleans reporting a flight attendant and multiple passengers were injured. The aircraft landed safely in New Orleans about 25 minutes after leaving FL310.

The FAA reported one flight attendant received serious injuries and 10 passengers minor injuries when the aircraft encountered severe turbulence.

On Jul 10th 2021 the NTSB reported the turbulence occurred 141nm south of New Orleans (Position: N27.5987 W89.9482) causing a serious injury to one crew member, a minor injury to another crew member and minor injuries to 7 passengers. The NTSB have opened an investigation into the occurrence rated an accident.
