An American Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N181AN performing flight AA-245 from Washington National,DC to Los Angeles,CA (USA) with 143 people on board, was enroute at FL380 about 250nm east of Indianapolis,IN (USA) when the crew reported an engine compressor problem and decided to divert to Indianapolis without declaring emergency or requesting equipment. The aircraft descended to FL320, then FL280 and 18,000 feet while on course to Indianapolis, landed safely on runway 05L about 50 minutes after leaving FL380 and taxied to the gate.

A replacement aircraft is estimated to reach Los Angeles the following day with a delay of 14 hours.
