An AirAsia Airbus A320-200, registration 9M-AGU performing flight AK-9327 from Langkawi to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) with 151 passengers and 5 crew, was in the initial climb when the flight crew decided to return to Langkawi reporting smoke in the cabin. The aircraft landed safely back in Langkawi about 13 minutes after departure. The aircraft vacated the runway and taxied to the apron, then an emergency evacuation via both left and right forward doors and slides took place.

A replacement A320-200N registration 9M-RAP reached Kuala Lumpur with a delay of about 8.5 hours.

On Dec 31st 2019 AirAsia reported the aircraft returned to Langkawi due to a technical issue.

Following a number of exchanges with the press offices the press office stated that there had been no smoke in the cabin and added following statement on Jan 2nd 2020: "The Captain decided to implement evacuation procedure as a precautionary measure based on the technical issue identified in flight. At no time was the safety of guests and crew compromised at any time."

On Jan 2nd 2020 The Aviation Herald learned, that an APU fire indication had occurred in flight prompting the diversion to Langkawi. The indication ceased but re-occurred after landing, which then resulted in the emergency evacuation.
