A Delta Airlines Boeing 767-400, registration N829MH performing flight DL-9 from London Heathrow,EN (UK) to Atlanta,GA (USA), was enroute at FL320 over the Atlantic Ocean near Shannon (Ireland) about to enter Oceanic Airspace, when the crew requested to turn around, climbed to FL340 and set course in the direction of Shannon initially dumping fuel, then turned towards London Heathrow requesting to descend to as low as possible to burn off further fuel, step descending to FL270, then FL150 and finally FL090. The aircraft landed safely at Heathrow Airport about 2 hours after turning around.

The aircraft was able to depart Heathrow again after about 2.5 hours on the ground and reached Atlanta with a delay of 5.5 hours.

A passenger reported a grinding noise was heard from the back of the aircraft whenever a toilet was flushed or water was run in a lavatory. The air conditioning system seemed to also malfunction. The crew announced they were considering to divert to Shannon but then decided to carry on to London Heathrow for the better repair facilities available. Upon landing in Atlanta the crew was 3 minutes short of exceeding maximum permitted crew duty time.
