An Austral MD-88 on behalf of Aerolineas Argentinas, registration LV-BOR performing flight AR-2874 from Buenos Aires Newbery,BA to El Calafate,SC (Argentina) with 118 people on board, had just taken off when the crew declared emergency reporting an engine failure and diverted to Buenos Aires' Ezeiza Airport for a safe landing on runway 35 about 30 minutes after departure.

The rotation Buenos Aires Newbery-El Calafate-Trelew-Buenos Aires Newbery was subsequently cancelled.

On Oct 23rd 2012 Argentina's JIAAC released their brief final report in Spanish stating during cruise flight the oil temperature of the right hand engine rose.
