Passengers reported the cabin lights suddenly went out and it was dark in the cabin. The aircraft began to descend, the captain announced they had an electrical fault and were diverting to Rio Gallegos, the nearest airport. About 15 minutes after the lights went out the lights suddenly came on again, the captain subsequently announced they had worked the checklists, activated an auxiliary system and were now able to continue to destination.
The airline reported the captain activated the APU after descending to a lower altitude. The aircraft is being examined.
