A TAP Air Portugal Airbus A330-200, registration CS-TOQ performing flight TP-231 from Lisbon (Portugal) to Washington Dulles,DC (USA), was enroute at FL390 over the Atlantic Ocean about 430nm west of Lisbon when the crew entered a hold to troubleshoot a problem, descended the aircraft to FL290 and decided to return to Lisbon declaring PAN PAN reporting a hydraulic problem. On approach to Lisbon the crew advised they needed a long approach to configure the aircraft for landing. The aircraft landed safely on Lisbon's runway 03 at a normal speed about 75 minutes after the decision to return.

The airline reported a technical problem prompted the return, emergency services were called on stand by. The technical problems affecting the hydraulic systems are being investigated.
