A replacement A320-200 registration VT-INS reached Delhi with a delay of 3.5 hours.
The airport reported air traffic control saw smoke from the left hand engine as the aircraft climbed out and alerted the crew.
The airline reported the crew observed engine vibrations for the #2 engine (right hand) and returned to Kolkata.
On Feb 13th 2018 The Aviation Herald learned that this occurrence was one of the occurrences leading to the EASA Emergency Airwortiness Directive, see News: EASA issues EAD regarding A320 Neo and A321 Neo engines, withdraws ETOPS with immediate effect. According to information received the aircraft experienced high vibrations from the right hand engine immediately after rotation for takeoff, the crew received a "ENG 2 STALL" ECAM indication, shut the engine down and returned. A post flight inspection revealed no debris in engine inlet or engine exhaust, all low pressure turbine stage 3 blades were intact with no impact damage.
