An Air China Boeing 787-900, registration B-1467 performing flight CA-784 from Auckland (New Zealand) to Beijing (China), was enroute at FL340 over the Pacific Ocean about 500nm north of Auckland when the left hand engine (Trent 1000) developed a problem causing the entire left hand side of the aircraft to lose electrical power. The crew decided to return to Auckland, descended the aircraft to FL330 and landed safely back in Auckland about 90 minutes later.

Air China reported the left hand engine failed causing the loss of electrical power for cabin, navigation, communication and radar. The autopilot continued to work.

Passengers reported the entire left side of the aircraft, including the lights on the outside (wing) went dark, while the right hand side remained illuminated.
