Vietnam A321 at Da Nang on Jul 12th 2017, temporary runway excursion, aircraft ain't no lawnmower

A Vietnam Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration VN-A610 performing flight VN-7179 from Hanoi to Da Nang (Vietnam), landed on Da Nang's runway 35R at 21:48L (14:48Z) with the first officer being pilot flying. The aircraft touched down to the right of the runway center line, the captain took control of the aircraft, the aircraft however continued to veer right temporarily leaving the runway with the right main gear. The right main gear took out two runway edge lights and went over soft ground, before the aircraft returned to the runway center line. The aircraft slowed without further incident and taxied to the apron.

A ground engineer found grass embedded in the right main gear, slats and flaps.

According to information The Aviation Herald received the rain intensity increased substantially while the aircraft was in the flare reducing forward visbility and making it hard to see the runway center line, at the same time a strong gust of crosswind at 24 knots occurred. The first officer flared early, the aircraft drifted off the center line, the captain took control but was not able to keep the aircraft within the runway edge lines.

The aircraft was taken out of service and remained on the ground in Da Nang until Sep 9th 2017 (almost two months).
