A JAL Japan Airlines Boeing 787-900, registration JA861J performing flight JL-414 from Helsinki (Finland) to Tokyo Narita (Japan), was in the initial climb out of Helsinki's runway 22R when ground observers heard loud bangs and streaks of flames from the right hand engine (GEnx). The crew reduced the engine to idle, stopped the climb at FL060, dumped fuel and returned to Helsinki for a safe landing on runway 22L about 65 minutes after departure.

ANS Finland (ATC provider) reported the crew initially reduced the engine to idle basically flying on single engine, the landing was made in normal mode with both engines operating.
