An Avianca Airbus A330-200, registration N973AV performing flight AV-72 from Bogota (Colombia) to Mexico City (Mexico), was enroute at FL400 about 130nm westnorthwest of San Salvador (El Salvador) when the crew needed to shut the right hand engine (Trent 772) down. The aircraft turned around, drifted down to FL250 and diverted to San Salvador for a safe landing on runway 07 about 55 minutes later.

Colombia's AIB rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation.
