An Avianca Airbus A330-200, registration N973AV performing flight AV-121 from London Heathrow,EN (UK) to Bogota (Colombia) with 238 passengers and 13 crew, was enroute at FL400 about 130nm southwest of Caracas (Venezuela) when the crew needed to initiate an emergency descent to FL100 due to the loss of cabin pressure and diverted to Caracas for a safe landing about 40 minutes later.

A passenger reported they were rebooked onto other flights departing around noon, 10 hours after landing.

The airline reported a malfunction of one of the valves controlling the cabin pressure prompted the crew to initiate an emergency descent to avert the loss of cabin pressure and to divert to Caracas.
