A JAL Japan Airlines Boeing 787-900, registration JA866J performing flight JL-724 (scheduled Jul 25th, actual Jul 26t) from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to Tokyo Narita (Japan), was enroute at FL370 over the Gulf of Thailand about 360nm northeast of Kuala Lumpur when the crew decided to return to Kuala Lumpur. The aircraft descended to FL320 and landed safely back about 2:10 hours after departure.

A passenger reported the flight had been delay by about 2:40 hours due to problems while starting one of the engines (GEnx). The aircraft was finally able to depart and was about one hour into the flight when the captain announced they had trouble with an engine and needed to return to Kuala Lumpur.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Kuala Lumpur about 20 hours after landing back.

A replacement Malaysia Airlines Airbus A330-300 registration 9M-MTI reached Tokyo as flight MH-70/JL-7092 with a delay of 11 hours.
