A Caribbean Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration 9Y-TAB performing flight BW-457 from Sint Maarten (Sint Maarten) to Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago), was about to depart from Sint Maarten's runway 10 when a number of spectators, amongst them a family from New Zealand, gathered at the fence just behind the runway threshold to experience the jet blast. When the aircraft accelerated the engines for takeoff at about 18:03L (22:03Z), a woman (57) of the New Zealand family lost her grip and was blown over, her head impacted a concrete barrier. The woman was resuscitated, emergency services took her to a hospital where the woman was pronounced dead.

9Y-TAB unaware of the accident departed without further incident and landed safely in Port of Spain.

Sint Maarten police reported they received emergency calls for Maho Beach shortly after 6pm. Arriving emergency services found the lifeless body of a woman, other people attempting to provide first aid. Emergency services resuscitated he woman and took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead however.

The family told NZ Media that they were watching a Boeing 737 departing for Trinidad. They knew about the risk, observed the warning signs along the fence indicating the dangers of the jet blast and regret, that the risk turned out the worst possible way.

Maho Beach, just ahead of the runway 10 threshold with the waterline about 50 meters from the threshold, is a tourist attraction to watch aircraft landing and departing as well as experience the jet blast of departing aircraft.
