A LGW Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter de Havilland Dash 8-400 on behalf of Air Berlin, registration D-ABQF performing flight AB-8766 from Dusseldorf (Germany) to Venice (Italy), was on final approach to Venice's runway 04R when the crew initiated a go around from about 1500-2000 feet MSL reporting an unsafe gear indication. The aircraft climbed to 3000, later 5000 feet and entered a hold for about 40 minutes while the crew was working the checklists and attempting to resolve the issue. The aircraft finally positioned for another approach to Venice's runway 04R about 48 minutes after the go-around. The aircraft was towed to the apron.

A passenger reported that the aircraft began to hold above Venice, cabin crew performed another safety briefing and began to prepare the cabin for a possible emergency landing, the passengers were reseated as close as possible to aircraft exits, all bags were stowed away. It finally emerged that the flight crew was unable to affirm the landing gear was down and locked, the main landing gear appeared down and in its normal position however. The passengers were instructed to put their life vests on. The aircraft landed normally with emergency services in attendance and was subsequently towed to the apron.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 14 hours, then positioned back to Dusseldorf but has not yet resumed service about 24 hours after landing.
